Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek offers a unique opportunity to explore one of the Himalayas’ most fascinating and culturally preserved regions. Known as the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” Upper Mustang remained closed to foreign visitors until 1992 and continues to require a special restricted area permit.

Located in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, the region features dramatic desert landscapes, colorful cliffs, ancient cave complexes, and traditional Tibetan villages. Unlike many Himalayan treks dominated by forests and glaciers, Upper Mustang presents a stark and beautiful high-altitude desert environment unlike anywhere else in Nepal.

The highlight of the journey is the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, the historic capital of the former Kingdom of Mustang. Here, visitors can explore centuries-old monasteries, royal palaces, and a living Tibetan culture that has remained remarkably intact despite the passage of time.
